Papers of Henry Clay [manuscript] 1818-1866, 1934.

The papers contain a legal deposition of Clay regarding a slave sale, 1818, introduction, 1845, on behalf of two Kentucky hemp brake inventors, an acknowledgement of his membership in the Columbian Horticultural Society, 1834, and a transcript of a letter conveying some property to his son. There is also a letter from a Clay Club secretary regarding a mass meeting in support of his 1844 presidential candidacy, a Talbotype photograph of him, an incomplete manuscript for a pro-Whig drama on the election of 1836, and a Clay-Freylinghuysen badge, 1844. An invitation to the celebration of the 89th anniversary of his birthday, 1866, and a 1934 letter concerning the purchase of the transcript above complete the collection.

Henry Clay Sr. (April 12, 1777 – June 29, 1852) was an American attorney and statesman who represented Kentucky in both the Senate and House. He was the seventh House speaker and the ninth secretary of state. He received electoral votes for president in the 1824, 1832, and 1844 presidential elections. He also helped found both the National Republican Party and the Whig Party.
